Desiccant for Containers, Trucks and transportation in general

What is a desiccant?

A desiccant is a product or material that can absorb moisture from the air, thereby reducing humidity in a controlled environment and thus protecting products from moisture damage.

Desiccant typesDesiccant absorption characteristics

Physical absorption

These desiccants physically absorb moisture by trapping moisture within their capillaries or on their surface, although the chemical properties of the water molecules remain unchanged, so the moisture absorption process is reversible. Typical desiccants for physical absorption: silica gel (silica gel), molecular sieve, etc.

Chemical absorption

Such desiccants absorb moisture and convert the resulting mixture into another substance by changing its chemical properties, a process that is irreversible. Typical desiccants of chemical absorption: calcium chloride, magnesium sulfate, etc.

Comparison of the amount of desiccant used

The most common desiccants used are silica gel and clay which absorb 15% to 40% of their dry weight, while our Calcium Chloride based KeepDry desiccant absorbs up to 300%. Once it absorbs the moisture, it turns into a gel so the water is trapped and does not run. This type of characteristic makes it ideal for use in transportation due to the high and variable temperatures that can occur.

The absorption rate of calcium chloride desiccant is 8 times to 15 times more than common desiccants.

For example, inside a 10 cubic meter hermetically sealed space at 30 ° C and 80% RH, there are 240 grams of moisture. To absorb all the moisture within that space, approximately 1000 grams of high-quality common desiccant is required, but only about 100 grams of Keepdry calcium chloride desiccant is required. This makes KeepDry desiccant extremely convenient compared to other types of desiccants when it comes to protecting large compartments such as containers or trucks from moisture.

Four common desiccants and their main characteristics.

DesiccantDescriptionCharacteristicsAbsorption rateApplication Temperature
Calcium chloride desiccantHigh purity CaCl 2 as the main absorption agent.Chemical absorption, non-toxic and odorless; High Moisture Absorption Capacityup to 300%-5 ° C to 90 ° C
Silica gelSiO 2 as the main ingredient, transparent and semi-transparent solid spheres.Physical absorption with mild reaction; Chemically resistant, relatively high mechanical resistance; Granules with a dry surface and no significant change in appearance after use; Reusable after oven drying.20% -40%below 35 ° C
Clay desiccantAlso called montmorillonite desiccant, powder or ball-shapedFree of additives, non-toxic, environmentally friendly.15% -23%below 50 ° C
Molecular SieveCrystalline aluminosilicate with homogeneous opening and relatively large surface areas and selective absorptionRecyclable, non-toxic, non-corrosive, chemically stable; Sensitive to ambient humidity, absorbs moisture even under ultra-low humidity10% - 25%can be used at high temperature
